Academic Reading (three times a week)
This course will focus on improving reading skills and increasing vocabulary related to academic content introduced in Semester 1 Reading and Vocabulary. Students will read from a variety of sources, including textbooks, graded readers, novels, newspapers, and magazines. The course also covers the reading section of the TOEFL iBT.
Academic Speaking (twice a week)
Building on concepts and skills introduced in semester 1 Speaking and Listening, this course offers an introduction to speaking in academic contexts (e.g., speaking with an advisor, classroom discussions, and group project work), with a focus on individual and group presentations.
Academic Listening I (twice a week)
Building on concepts and skills introduced in semester 1 Speaking and Listening, this course offers an introduction to listening in academic contexts, with a focus on academic lectures. A variety of sources of listening input (e.g., news broadcasts, podcasts, video lectures) will be used in support of the textbook as a springboard for classroom discussions and activities.
Academic Writing I (three times a week)
Building on concepts and skills introduced in Semester 1 Writing and Grammar, this course focuses on developing writing skills to produce clear, concise academic essays in several rhetorical styles. Attention is also paid to creative written expression. This course will also include opportunities to practice for the writing section of the TOEFL iBT.
